DIG reimagined an underutilized space at Bohn Hall, transforming it into a vibrant community kitchen that capitalizes on breathtaking views of the NYC skyline. The student kitchen is located at the 3rd floor elevator lobby, situated a half story between resident floors. The resident rooms connect to this space via a small landing and lobby. Its placement in this interstitial floor of the building activates an underutilized region of the building formerly relegated for aimless storage. Nearly all of the walls surrounding this area are masonry and located on an exterior wall, which required creative integration for power, data, fire, plumbing and mechanical ductwork. This state-of-the-art kitchen features new Energy Star rated appliances, upgraded plumbing, new LED lighting and flooring In the elevator lobby, colorful acoustical panels serve a dual purpose as tackable surfaces offering a more welcoming aesthetic into the design solution.
