An historic church is adapted for split-use — for the continued use of the congregation and cultural activities, and to house women and their families affected by domestic violence.
The First Reformed Church, constructed in 1812, lost the majority of its interior in a 1971 fire set by the abuser of a woman seeking refuge in the church. This tragedy inspired the subsequent renovations and addition that serves a renewed purpose.
While much of the interior was gutted, the design team was challenged to maintain the church’s exterior and interior balcony in compliance with State Historic Preservation guidelines.
In the end, a dynamic community gathering space was created on the first floor, featuring four original wood columns supporting the balcony and second floor, and a main stair to the second floor sanctuary and cultural center. This space receives abundant light from four large circle-head windows. A smaller addition in the rear of the church provides access to three floors of supportive housing containing 10 units, separate and secure from the church.
